Our Favorite Songs to Sing With Your Preschooler

My preschoolers love to sing and dance, often times they break out in song on their own. Sometimes they want a new song and look to me to come up with the lyrics. I have learned to keep a few songs in my back pocket just in case.

5 of our favorite songs to sing with our preschoolers are:

  1. You Are My Sunshine
  2. Ring Around the Rosie
  3. Wheels on the Bus
  4. Dinosaur Stomp
  5. Alphafriends Song

Have you had enough of baby shark? There are days when that song just gets stuck in our heads and we want to sing something new. Check out the lyrics and some videos of our favorite songs below.

Singing With Your Preschooler

Singing can be fun. When you need to buy another three minutes before something starts. When you are stuck in the car on a road trip or a doctors waiting room a song can help pass the time. I tend to pick songs I can remember easily and after singing them with my children they have become second nature.

I started singing “You are my Sunshine” while rocking my first born to sleep 6 years ago. I continued with my sons and now I can sing or hum it during any activity without thinking much about the lyrics or tune. The song has also become soothing and comforting to my children. So our first song is a Berry favorite.

“You Are My Sunshine” – Lullaby

You Are My Sunshine
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are grey
You’ll never know, dear
How much I love you
Please don’t take my sunshine away

My littlest one, Oliver age 1, loves singing. He belts out the Frozen soundtrack better than my daughter, age 6. One song he has taken upon himself to sing anytime of the day is “Ring Around the Rosie”. He mainly hums the first few lines then says “ashes, ashes” really clearly and falls to the ground. All four of my kids will also hold hands, spin in a circle singing and then drop to the floor. It is cute to watch them all dance and sing together. Here are the lyrics we use.

Ring Around the Rosie – Lullaby

Ring-a-round the rosie,
A pocket full of posies,
Ashes! Ashes!
We all fall down.

And sometimes I try to change their lyrics to “Achoo, Achoo” instead of Ashes. They haven’t caught on to that little change yet!

My boys love cars, especially pointing them out while driving. One thing they are always amazed with is a city bus or a school bus. Mainly because of their large size and bright colors. Whenever we see one we start singing “The Wheels on the Bus” and we recently started incorporating hand movements with song to encourage motor skills (check out the video below for some movement ideas). “The Wheels on the Bus” is a great song to add to your family song list because you don’t have to remember exact lyrics. You can make up parts of the bus and song as you go. You can even take turns choosing what element of the bus comes next. Here are some basic lyrics, verses you can sing in any order.

The Wheels on the Bus – Little Baby Bum

The wheels on the bus go round and round
Round and round
Round and round
The wheels on the bus go round and round
All through the town

The wipers on the bus go Swish, swish, swish
Swish, swish, swish
Swish, swish, swish
The wipers on the bus go Swish, swish, swish
All through the town

The horn on the bus goes Beep, beep, beep
Beep, beep, beep
Beep, beep, beep
The horn on the bus goes Beep, beep, beep
All through the town

The doors on the bus go open and shut
Open and shut
Open and shut
The doors on the bus go open and shut
All through the town

The Driver on the bus says “Move on back
Move on back, move on back”
The Driver on the bus says “Move on back”
All through the town

The babies on the bus says “Wah, wah, wah
Wah, wah, wah
Wah, wah, wah”
The babies on the bus says “Wah, wah, wah”
All through the town

The mommies on the bus says “Shush, shush, shush
Shush, shush, shush
Shush, shush, shush”
The mommies on the bus says “Shush, shush, shush”
All through the town

We are big fans of Mother Goose Club. (You can find their videos on Netflix and You Tube). We love a lot of the songs they sing but our most favorite is “Dinosaur Stomp”. My nephew often will break out into song and start stomping around the house doing his dinosaur movements. I highly encourage you to watch the video below and see how cute and simple the movements are. I am always excited for a song that gets the kids up and moving around to burn off some energy. This song may be a new one for you so here are the lyrics. Again they are simple and catchy.

Dinosaur Stop – Mother Goose Club

Dinosaurs have great big feet that stomp, stomp, stomp
Dinosaurs have great big teeth that chomp, chomp, chomp

Stomp, stomp, stomp
And chomp, chomp, chomp
Stomp, stomp, stomp
And a chomp, chomp, chomp

Stompasaurus, stomp, stomp
Chompasaurus, chomp, chomp
I’m a saurus, stomp, stomp
You’re a saurus, chomp, chomp

Dinosaurs have great big claws that crunch, crunch, crunch
Dinosaurs have great big jaws that munch, munch, munch
Crunch, crunch, crunch
And a munch, munch, munch
Crunch, crunch, crunch
And a munch, munch, munch

Crunchasaurus, crunch, crunch
Munchasaurus, munch, munch
I’m a saurus, crunch, crunch
You’re a saurus, munch, munch

Stompin’ and a chompin’
Crunchin’ and a munchin’
Stompin’ and a chompin’
Crunchin’ and a munchin’

Stompasaurus, stomp, stomp
Chompasaurus, chomp, chomp
Crunchasaurus, crunch, crunch
Munchasaurus, munch, munch

I’m a saurus, stomp, stomp
You’re a saurus, chomp, chomp
We’re a saurus, crunch, crunch
Dinosaurus, munch, munch

Dinosaurs have great big feet that stomp, stomp, stomp
Dinosaurs have great big teeth that chomp, chomp, chomp
Dinosaurs

The last song is all about learning letters and their sounds. My daughter learned this song while in Transitional Kindergarden and again in Kindergarten. When we started doing distance learning due to the COVID-19 Pandemic we listened to the song at home and my Preschoolers fell in love with the song. We now sing it pretty regularly to encourage my preschooler to learn letter sounds. The song is very catchy and I find myself singing it alone all the time! I don’t have all the lyrics for this song but I recommend you print out this printable and keep it in your living room, car or purse for easy reference whenever you feel like sining the Alphafriends Song. Soon your children will remember each friends name. Even when you forget.
