Quick Craft Ideas
We are kind of a crafty family, I am using the term loosely in my head. My kids love to do a craft, it can take 5 minutes or longer and they will love it. I love to grab all the little foam crafts that are in the seasonal section at the front of Micheals but of course my kids want more than just one craft per holiday. Here are a few of the things I pick up from time to time to get our creative juices flowing.
When I don’t feel like prepping all the construction paper or supplies or I am dreading paint and glitter clean up I have a back up ready. I love to pull out a great craft kit or coloring book. Here are a few of my go-to back up or quick craft ideas:
- Sticky Mosaics- These are a good activity for your kids 5 years old and up. They will get a card with a pretty picture on it and a bunch of squares or circles that are numbered. Then they have a bunch of sticky foam sheets and a key that tells what color is what number. They place all the shapes to complete the picture. My daughter loves to gift the finished pictures or decorate her room with them. Here are some Amazon links: Horses, Mermaids, Dinosaurs, princesses.
- Magic Water Coloring or Just Add Water coloring books. These are great to take on the go and can be colored over and over again. We got my daughter the Hoses and Unicorns version but there are Animals and Dinosaurs as well. The book comes with a paint brush and I usually provide a ramekin of water. Your child paints the page and watches the colors become vibrant. Once the page dries the colors fade for another use. These are great for three year olds and up.
- I love to do just add water coloring books as well and I recommend Be Happy Just Add Water for mamas who want to color alongside your kiddos. There are even a few pencil coloring pages included. You can tell which is which in the left margin by either a water drop or pencil.
- For a great travel coloring book I recommend Kaleidoscope Coloring books. We have Unicorns, Narwhals and More and Mermaids & Seahorses. To make these travel friendly I like to hot glue a ziplock bag to the inside cover so Eleanor can place her markers back in without them getting lost. Next on our shopping list is the Gel Pen set!
Painting
A fun little hobby our family picked up recently is rock painting. We like to pick up smooth-ish rocks when we find them. The beach is a great place to get really smooth rocks, but sometimes parks and hikes have some good finds as well. We like to paint them with paint pens or acrylic craft paint depending on how much coverage we need. The paint pants are easier for smaller ones to manipulate, it’s a lot like coloring with markers or crayons. My sister likes to spray the finished rocks with a water proof glaze to protect them a little from weather. Then we give the rocks as gifts, decorate the yard or put them back where we found them, when appropriate.
