We love books around here. We love to cuddle up in a big chair or all on the couch together and read. Typically each kiddo will pick a few books and we take turns reading each one’s pick.

Mom’s Picks
- The Little Blue Truck is mom’s all time favorite!! I would pick this book to read every single time. The illustrations are pretty, the words are simple and the message is great. We all need to be kind to others because we never know when we will need a little help.
- Dragon’s Love Tacos by Adam Rubin. I have a girlfriend who gifts this book at every baby shower. It was her son’s most favorite book and she leaves adorable little notes in the cover to each new baby. We read this book often especially before bed, it is just long enough to calm down the little ones before drifting off to sleep. And who doesn’t love tacos!
- If You Give a Mouse a Cookie by Laura Numeroff. We got this book along with a Mouse stuffy when Anderson was born. I had already been reading a board version of the story to Eleanor almost daily since she was little so it was the perfect addition to the family.
- The themed baby book I have for Eleanor is based on Guess How Much I Love You, by Sam Mc Bratney. So along with the baby book we have the hardcover version and board book version of this story. It is one of the stories I read very often to Eleanor as she was a baby and we recently added it back into the rotation with the boys.
- Oh, the Places You’ll Go! By Dr. Seuss. Some Dr Seuss books can be young twisters. This one however is a fun read. I personally love all the colors and the message in this book. It is great to read when feelings are down, when big moments happen and anyway in-between.
Eleanor just finished Kindergarten and is going into first grade in the fall. This last year she learned to read and started working on her schools reading program. We found over the year that she loves reading, and loves stories. Here are some of her favorites.
Eleanor’s Picks (6 Year old):
- Eleanor loves all Mo Willems books, Piggie and Gerald and Pigeon are our favorite charcters. And her most favorite is Happy Pig Day by Mo Willems. We all love the artwork and she especially loves that she can read pretty much all the books on her own.
- Last Halloween Eleanor’s teacher read The Legend of Spookly the Square Pumpkin by Joe Troiano in class and Eleanor loved it! We bought our own version to read at home anytime we like.
- We were riveted a copy of Disney’s, Frozen Storybook Collection for Christmas a few years ago. Eleanor can’t read this book on her own yet but we love to read a different story each day. Some of the stories you will be familiar with if you have seen all the Frozen videos and some are new.
- Dr Seusss books are great for beginning readers because of the rhyming and flow. When we visit libraries Eleanor will grab a Dr Seuss book because she knows she can read it with little help. Her most favorite is Green Eggs and Ham by Dr Seuss.
Anderson is my cuddler. He has always loved to grab a book and snuggle in my lap while I read to him. I could be reading something incredibly boring and he would love it. We didn’t pick boring ones to share with you, check these out.
Anderson’s Picks (4 year old):
- Anderson has Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Bill Martin Jr and Eric Carle memorized and can “read” it to me now. He is so proud to be reading on his own ;).
- Pete the Cat: Go, Pete, Go by James Dean is currently Andersons favorite story to have read to him because he loves race cars and of course Pete. All Pete the Cat books are really good and loved around here.
- We are learning letters and practicing them daily. I like to have Anderson read me Alphaprints: ABC by Roger Priddy because he knows most of the letters by himself. Our toddler also loves the texture in this book.
Little Oliver is not at a reading age yet, but like my other two kiddos he loves to sit in our laps and hear a good story. Most recently he has been repeating words back and here are a few books he loves to mimic reading.
Oliver’s favorites (2 years old):
- A great book for repeating is The Very Hungry Caterpillar’s Favorite Words by Grosset & Dunlap. I like that this book isn’t just colors or animals, but a mix of different items.
- Both of my boys love Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Eileen Christelow. Recently Oliver started bringing me this book to read and attempting to say the title. Then as I read the book he follows along shaking his finger and quoting “No jump on BED”. It is quite adorable and a memory I will keep for a long time.
- Another great book for introducing names of objects to your toddlers is First 100 Words by Priddy Books. A fun way to read this book is after you have read through it a few times have your little one read it back to you and see what names they have learned. Or have them repeat the words with you. It is amazing how quickly they pick it up.
